Trade Centre survivor: 31 May, 2002
To New York now where a silent ceremony has marked the end of recovery
operations at the World Trade Centre site.
An
empty flag draped stretcher was carried out of a pit which marks the
centre`s foundations.
It
was intended to symbolise the almost 1800 victims whose remains have
not been found.
More
than 2,800 people were killed in New York on September 11.
There
were some incredible survival stories though and New York businessman
Lucio Caputo is a case in point.
After
the first plane hit he decided to use the stairs and to get out of his
office on the 78th floor.
When
he reached the 23rd floor, rescue crews wanted him to congregate on
that level presumably to allow emergency service personnel to reach
the upper floors.
But,
as he told World View on September 12 last year, his extinct told him
not to comply with their instructions.
So,
nine months on, how is Lucio Caputo fairing?
He
told me the recounting of his close call during numerous media interviews
was a cathartic experience.
And
as a former newspaper journalist, he knew how to become detached from
his own story.
